Whole Foods and Organic Wine
AUSTIN, Texas - Whole Foods Market here has expanded its organic wine offerings and become the first national retailer to carry USDA-certified organic NSA (no sulfites added) wines from Italy and Spain.
The imports come from Bodegas Iranzo, Spain's oldest estate-bottle winery, and La Cantina Pizzolato, Italy's top-selling organic winery. Varieties include Spartico Organic Tempranillo and La Cantina Pizzolato Organic Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Rosso Convento. All are priced under $13.
"We see more and more interest in these wines from wine enthusiasts who believe NSA wines provide the most pure expression of the grape and from those who have sulfite sensitivities and allergies," said Geof Ryan, national wine buyer for Whole Foods, in a statement.
Approximately 10 to 20 wines per Whole Foods location are organic NSA wines. The retailer sources domestic varieties from Roule Rouge in Northern California, and Frey Vineyards in Mendocino County, Calif., which produces such wines as an organic red, white and rose as well as true varietals like organic chardonnay and petite syrah.
