About Robert Sinskey

Robert Sinskey

Rob Sinskey is an atypical vintner. He is a native Californian and a wine guy who did not attend wine school. Instead, Rob received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Parsons School of Design in New York City, where the only thing happening in agriculture was conducted in apartment closets.

Over the past twenty years he has grown his 100% organic and biodynamic certified winegrowing operation to over 200 acres of premium vineyards in the Carneros and Stags Leap districts of Napa and Sonoma Valleys. It all began when a six-month assignment assisting his father turned into a twenty-year obsession. "After a stint in advertising, I was looking for something real where I could, excuse the pun, put down roots. Then, my father called for help. His avocation in wine growing had developed into a fledgling business and he needed assistance. I think a week had passed before I discovered that his avocation had become my obsession." Rob's philosophy that "Wine is not an athletic event," still holds true to this day.

The goal is to make "pure wines of character that pair well with cuisine." Rob believes that wine should not be a "quick study", but rather, sneak up on you, seduce you, and evolve in the glass and in the bottle. With a solid belief that artisanal winemaking begins with the care of the land, Rob, along with winemaker Jeff Virnig, quietly converted their vineyards to organics beginning in 1991. As they honed their craft, they slowly and methodically developed biodynamic "whole farm" practices.

Rob and Jeff adopted methods that not only produced wines of individuality, but also left a minimal footprint on the land. They believed in developing vineyard ecosystems with the utilization of farm animals, the development of beneficial predatory bird and animal habitat and fish friendly farming practices. Equally important, though less obvious, has been their development of a living soil system by establishing farm methods that encourage vigorous populations of microorganisms through the use of cover crops, composts, biodynamic preparations and the utilization of low impact farm implements.

Wines

Abraxas Vin de Terroir

Robert Sinskey Abraxas Vin de Terroir

Scintilla Sonoma Vineyard
Los Carneros

Colour: red

Grapes:

43% Pinot Gris
32% Pinot Blanc
15% Gewurztraminer
10% Riesling

Tasting Notes: A pale, brilliant platinum blond color speaks of the wine's purity. A snap of the glass stopper reveals scents of apples, citrus, and stone fruit; all backed by flowers, herbs, yeast and a beguiling, underlying, minerality. The wine crackles with energy, ethereal and vivacious on the palate with crisp high note flavors of apple and lemon contrasting with the more luscious notes of peaches, herbs, white flower and finishing with a touch of ginger-like minerality. Yum!

Cabernet Franc

Robert Sinskey Cabernet Franc

Vandal Vineyard
Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Cabernet Franc

Tasting Notes: An opaque ruby purple attracts the eye. Effusive aromas of plum, crushed blackberry, candied violet, backed by cocoa dust and sweet (almost fennel-like) herbs swirl from the glass. These gregarious aromas pick up complexity with restrained underpinnings of nutmeg and vanilla from French oak barrels. The flavors mimic the aromas on the palate. Primary fruit currently showboats, as the fine, ripe fruit tannins rest gently on youthful wood tannins. Evolution is pointing in the right direction, making this a wine that can be consumed now but will give pleasure over the next ten years or more, that is, if you can wait. A vibrant mouth-watering acidity enlivens the salivary glands, leading to a long, juicy, deep chocolate-berry finish that lingers long after this delicious wine first touches your lips.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Robert Sinskey Cabernet Sauvignon Vandal

Vandal Vineyard
Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: Youthful in its deep luxurious purple velvet color with classic varietal scents of dark berries, currants and notes of chocolate, coffee and a trace of capsicum, a hallmark of Cabernet Sauvignon. Red and black currants join sweet herbs on the palate as soft, fine tannins weave a generous silky texture and a refreshing crispness provides balance and contrast.

Cabernet Sauvignon

Robert Sinskey Cabernet Sauvignon

SLD Estate

Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Cabernet Sauvignon

Tasting Notes: Meticulous and complex, sumptuous and elegant, the age-worthy "SLD" Cabernet Sauvignon is one of RSV's most exclusive wines. Primary aromas and flavors of currant, blackberry and plum are layered amongst more complex notes of anise, mineral, cocoa powder and herbs. The quiet power of its structure balances on bright, mouth-watering acidity and super fine tannin for incredible depth and length. It has an appropriate youthful enthusiasm that will benefit from either a swirl in a glass or a splash in a decanter and will reward those with the patience to let this wine age for a few years. As with all RSV wines, serve with food!

Commander Zinskey

Robert Sinskey Commander Zinskey

Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Zinfandel

Tasting Notes: The Commander Zinskey is not your normal Napa Valley Zinfandel. The organic and Biodynamically farmed half acre planting of Zinfandel on top of RSV's Vandal Vineyard lends itself to a wine that is elegant and balanced, with just 13.8% alc by volume. This "claret" style Zin is subtle at first whiff with hints of blackberry and bramble spice. The dark liquid almost vibrates with purity as the first taste reveals a tight structure with cornerstones of fully resolved tannin and mouth watering crispness. As the wine swirls in the glass, it becomes a quiet storm as the flavors begin to open with waves of black fruit, licorice, bramble and warm spice. It is a delicious wine that will only improve with time, both in the glass and in the bottle. It is everything a classic Zinfandel once was... and can be.

Marcien, Proprietary Red

Robert Sinskey Marcien, Proprietary Red

Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Tasting Notes: Marcien draws the eye to its lustrous deep purple core, which lightens as it veers through ruby in approaching a pink rim. The aromas enshroud your sense of smell in a dense cloud of currants, plums, sweet herbs, violets, warm fresh olive bread and cocoa. Flavors burst on the palate with a sip. The plums taste dark, joined by bright strawberries, intertwined with herbs recalling sage and fennel, touched lightly by cocoa nib and vanilla, all underlaid by the savory intensity the Japanese call umami. The ripe tannins weave a luxurious texture, and these, combined with remarkable concentration and exquisite balance promise decades to explore culinary suitors.

Merlot

Robert Sinskey Merlot

Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Merlot

The 2008 vintage produced a cushy, zingy Merlot with fruit aromas of blackberries, cherries and plum with floral notes of fennel-touched violet and darker earthier tones of black olive and bramble. These flavors follow through upon a sip, joined by enticing notes of bittersweet cocoa. It's supple yet bright with layers of texture and long in the finish. Drink now or age for five to ten years. 16 Barrels Produced for 392 cases.

Muscat Blanc

Robert Sinskey Muscat Blanc

Los Carneros

Colour: white

Grapes:

100% Muscat

Tasting Notes: RSV's tiny production Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains (42 cases), grown in our Biodynamic Scintilla Sonoma Vineyard, is provocative, evocative, musky, grape-y, flowery, itchy, foxy, sexy, crisp and delicious! Though more elegant than a typical Muscat, it still strikes a bold pose with a "tickle your nose at arm's length" citrus blossom perfume. RSV Muscat has a fresh, sweet allure, yet is dry and crisp, quaffable yet complex, stunningly delicious on its own, yet perfect at the table. It is a contradiction that works as the flavors resolve into mouthwatering freshness, engaging the palate into high alert as it seeks out other forms of sustenance - like the one that follows.

Pinot Blanc

Robert Sinskey Pinot Blanc

Los Carneros

Colour: white

Grapes:

100% Pinot Blanc

Tasting Notes: A swirl sends brilliant, platinum blond waves up the side of the glass, releasing a cloud of aromas redolent of jasmine, lime, almond and flint. Upon a sip, the wine fills the mouth, hitting many notes at once, rich with texture, showing ample weight, but bursting with a bright, refreshing cut that gets you right back to your plate and/or glass to repeat the experience.

Pinot Gris

Robert Sinskey Pinot Gris

Los Carneros

Colour: white

Grapes:

100% Pinot Gris

Tasting Notes: Brilliant platinum blonde color and clean, true aromas of melon, ginger-spiced pear and apple blossom exemplify purity. Upon a sip, aromas expand into vibrant flavors, bright and youthful, with a delicate touch of floral perfume and almonds. The wine snaps with citrus-like crispness rarely seen in a New World white, contrasted with a richness that makes for one satisfyingly mouth-watering wine. It is ready for the table now, and will surprise when resurrected from the cellar several years down the road.

Pinot Gris Late

Robert Sinskey Pinot Gris Late

Los Carneros

Colour: white

Grapes:

100% Pinot Gris

Tasting Notes: Pear, apple and lime aromas vie for attention before touched by scents of delicate honeysuckle backed by "wet stone" minerality. Upon a sip, the wine's richness fills the mid-palate. It's not a dry wine, but it's not sticky sweet either. Voluptuous and ethereal, it tickles the tip of the tongue with honey. Ripe fruit is supported by subtle notes of melon, almonds and citrus zest that resolve with a kiss of minerals. Its fruit and silken texture strike a balance, progressing across the palate with a mouthwatering, citrus-like brightness for a refreshing finish. Sure, it's great with delicate desserts, but to limit this wine to non-savory applications would be a shame. Choucroute garni comes to mind, as well as many spicy cuisines... and don't forget the cheese course!

Pinot Noir

Robert Sinskey Pinot Noir Capa

Capa Vineyard
Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes: Capa's wine gleams a darker ruby than RSV's other vineyards, but it still allows the eye through, as Pinot should. Dark cherry aromas rise from the glass, intertwined with exotic fragrances of sweet spice and sous bois. The aromas coalesce into flavors of mixed cherries, deep black and bright red, with a lace of pie spice, and a liberal dose of that earthy, sensual musk that is so enticing in good Pinot Noir. The wine feels dense and concentrated, savory and rich, but has an edge that keeps things refined and food friendly.

Pinot Noir

Robert Sinskey Pinot Noir Four

Four Vineyards
Los Carneros, Napa Valley Four

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes: This wine is all class and confidence. It does not flaunt or strut, but instead invites you in to study its elegance. There is so much in there! Classic Pinot Noir aromas emerge, redolent of red cherries, earth, tea and rose. It's high toned on the palate, with deep, almost nervous, energy that recalls a thoroughbred about to run. Everything is in its place, beautifully integrated, finding the sweet spot to balance between power, elegant structure, texture and fruit. This wine can definitely sustain its end of a long term relationship. Put some down and watch this one develop.

Pinot Noir

Robert Sinskey Pinot Noir Three

Three Amigos Vineyard
Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Grapes:

43% Pinot Gris
32% Pinot Blanc
15% Gewurztraminer
10% Riesling

Tasting Notes: Aromas of back fruit, strawberry, and herbs presage rich flavors of black cherry, more strawberry, clove, subtle olive and earth. Silken texture carries the flavors beautifully, and the bright fresh cut of the wine keeps one coming back for more refreshment.

Pinot Noir

Robert Sinskey Pinot Noir Vandal

Vandal Vineyard
Los Carneros, Napa Valley

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes: Beguiling aromas of woodsy undergrowth and dark fruit demand further, less ethereal inspection. Upon a sip, the wine is bright and focused, but keeps to the darker side of fruit, with black cherry, plum notes, tea, and that persistent earthiness that good Pinot Noir must have. As usual, Vandal yields fruit with more tannin than the other vineyards, and this is in evidence here. The tannins weave a sensual texture for the flavors to color, and makes this Pinot Noir a good friend of grilled meats, amongst others.

Pinot Noir

Robert Sinskey Pinot Noir

Los Carneros

Colour: red

Grapes:

100% Pinot Noir

Tasting Notes: A cushy-zingy Pinot Noir with bright cranberry and raspberry notes, an undercurrent of peat and a touch of exotic baking spices like cinnamon and vanilla. The wine is vibrant and full of life on the palate with a mouthwatering, long finish. Share with friends, family and those you want to know better.

Vin Gris of Pinot Noir

Robert Sinskey Vin Gris of Pinot Noir

Los Carneros

Colour: rose

Tasting Notes: The Vin Gris delicate hue speaks of purity. Born of whole-cluster pressed Pinot Noir, its copper-tinged salmon color recalls spring in Napa Valley. The wine's beguiling aromas of bright fresh berries and herbs are a delight. A taste induces smiles with a wide palate of refreshing flavors: wild strawberry, cranberry, and watermelon rind, all scented with an implacable category defying floral herb note. Be warned... once a bottle is opened, willpower will be challenged and you will be hard pressed not to finish it. We suggest sharing with a friend or two.
